At last. A current, comprehensive text devoted to bricks and brickwork, applicable to the New Zealand building environment. Written in an easy to read format this compilation reflects the author's obvious passion for all things brick. For most, brick is perceived as being an alternative cladding material requiring minimal maintenance. In this book the author outlines both enhancements for traditional brick construction as well as alternative construction systems to the commonplace veneer. With sections covering the history of bricks, construction techniques, brick treatments and frequently asked questions, this book will have broad appeal. Indeed, whether you be a designer, tradesperson, specifier, home-owner, student or just interested in the topic, you will find much of interest inside these covers. UNITEC Institute of Technology is New Zealand's largest provider of education within the Building Industry, providing education and training in the fields of Carpentry, Architectural Technology, Architecture, Quantity Surveying, Building and Project Management. This publication will be of immense benefit, in the understanding of this topic, to these students.

In my role as a Building Certifier there is a constant need to read and research building materials and products, whether they be new or existing. Research can be quite time-consuming: it is therefore essential that information be easily sourced and referenced.
The Brick Book written by John Oliver has been extremely well researched and is a very informative and interesting book. John is passionate about his topic and includes everything you could possibly want to know about bricks.
It is written in a simple, easy to understand language and is supported with good diagrams, clearly depicting all necessary construction details. There are helpful tips and advice notes throughout the book, which will assist anyone building, designing or living in a brick home.
The Brick Book is a 'must have' reference tool, which will benefit Building Certifiers, Building Officials, designers, builders, students and home-owners.

The Brick Book is certainly a welcome reference guide. Interesting for the layman, informative to the student and a 'must read' for the bricklayer, architect and building inspector/certifiers.
The Brick Book is testament to John Oliver's commitment to the brick trade. John's enthusiasm and interest, especially concerning industry 'Standards' and the need for continued improvement, can only be applauded.
